Title:Innovative, Integrated use of Data for Evaluation, Assessment and Surveillance for Oral Health (IDEAS)
Status:Completed
Topic:Oral Health
Funding Source:Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Funding Period:1999-2002
Study Design:Pilot Study
Purpose:To build and evaluate an oral health surveillance capacity by enhancing and integrating into existing systems; to pilot test an integrative data systems process on a regional level, andto evaluate the process for feasibility of statewide implementation
Further Study Details:This project was conducted in collaboration with the State of CT Department of Public Health’s Oral Health Program.Phase 1 established an Oral Health/IDEAS Center and created a Community Action Team to implement objectives; assess the status of oral health information at the federal, state and local level; and recruit a wide array of sites, such as dental offices, schools, nursing homes, dental clinics and the health district, at the local level to test the feasibility of creating an integrated oral health data system.Phase 2 involved data systems development, data integration and collection activities at 6 pilot sites.
Findings:While the IDEAS team successfully met the primary project objectives, the experience demonstrated some challenges inherent in designing and initiating oral health data collection and surveillance from a variety of traditional and non-traditional sources. These include: staff time to collect and report data; computer capability and compatibility; and reluctance on the part of some organizations to cooperate due to administrative policies.
